About the Three Sisters commemorative plate
This eight inch square glass plate was produced to commemorate the Canadian and British Lancasters and the Vulcan B2.
In 2014, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster, FM213 G-VRA, nicknamed ‘Vera’, made the long journey to Britain and appeared at various displays alongside the BBMF Lancaster, PA474, based at RAF Coningsby. This plate was produced to commemorate that union and the last flight of Vulcan B2 XH558 in 2015.
The plate features prints of the signatures of Fred Sutherland and Johnny Johnson MBE DFM. Fred was the front gunner in Lancaster ED912 of 617 Squadron, which breached the Eder Dam during Operation Chastise, the ‘Dambusters Raid’ on 16-17th May 1943. Fred died in January 2019, aged 97. Johnny was the bomb aimer on Lancaster ED825 which attacked the Sorpe Dam on the raid. He is 99 years old this month and is the last surviving ‘Dambuster’.
The plate also features the signatures of the pilots and navigators of the two Lancaster aircraft.
This is a fantastic and rare piece of aviation history. The plates originally retailed at £50 each. It comes in a box with a plate stand and would be a fantastic addition to any BBMF Club member’s collection.
