The BBMF Visitor Centre at Coningsby now has a Virtual Reality (VR) Station with two VR headsets. Visitors can don the headsets and find themselves on a flight in the Lancaster, sitting in the aircraft’s mid-upper turret. The immersive experience provides 360 degree vision from the turret as the Lancaster manoeuvres. It is the closest most people will get to flying in the Lancaster and it’s completely free.
The provision of the VR Station has been a truly joint project, with the RAF BBMF providing the 360-degree video from the Lancaster and procuring the VR headsets using funds from the RAF Memorial Flight Club. Lincolnshire County Council, which runs the BBMF Visitor Centre, has provided the operating system and the furniture (sitting down is advised to avoid falling over!).
If you have ever wondered what it is like to fly in the Lancaster, do come along and try it.
