Win a flight alongside a Spitfire

Win a flight beside a Spitfire, in the ex-BBMF de Havilland Devon

We’re starting the year with another fantastic ballot prize! One lucky club member will win a flight in the 1946 de Havilland Devon, which was previously part of the BBMF at RAF Coningsby.

As if that wasn’t good enough, the winner will fly alongside a Spitfire in the same air space that the Battle of Britain was fought. The experience would usually cost £579 and has been kindly donated by the team at Aero Legends.

How to enter the ballot

All current members of the RAF Memorial Flight Official Club have been entered into this month’s ballot. If you’re not already a member, please join the Club before 31 January 2017.

As well as being entered into this month’s prize draw, you’ll also receive a Club membership pack. The pack contains detailed information about the BBMF and exclusive gifts including a BBMF pin badge, car sticker and wallplanner.

Members can also claim free aircraft hangar tours at the BBMF Visitor Centre and will receive our Club magazine, published twice a year.

About this month’s prize

Arrival

Aero Legends staff will greet you at the Aero Legends main reception at Headcorn Aerodrome in Kent and proceed with your check-in.

Headcorn Aerodrome has free parking and good facilities. With excellent viewing areas alongside the grass runway, a café and licensed ‘Wings’ bar, your family and friends are welcome to come along to savour the atmosphere and share your day.

Your Aircraft

You will fly in an ex-RAF 1946 de Havilland Devon, famously used by Air Chief Marshall Sir Basil Embry as his personal transport during his time as Commander Of Allied Forces, Central Europe.

In 1985 the aircraft joined the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) at RAF Coningsby, where the aircraft was used as a crew transport in support of the BBMF Lancaster, Spitfires and Hurricanes. It was sold off in 1998.

The Devon is a comfortable aircraft inside, with roomy seats and large panoramic windows. There are excellent photo opportunities.

In the Air

Soon after take-off you will be thrilled as the Spitfire draws alongside. The sight of the Spitfire being put through its paces will take your breath away and your heart will race as you imagine the emotions of the pilots in ‘the long hot summer of 1940’.

The highlight of this tour is to see the wonderful sight of the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone. Set in the cliff top, this 80-metre propeller with a statue of the Lone Pilot sitting in the middle is a tribute to ‘The Few’ who fought so valiantly in the Battle of Britain.

As you circle overhead you will enjoy the spectacle of the Spitfire flying with you, and the Memorial as the backdrop – a photographer’s dream shot! The spectacular British coastline enhances the whole experience, with the beaches showing off the camouflage of TD314 to great effect.

Ground Viewing

During the event the Spitfire requires refuelling and maintenance checks, and at that time you will be able to view the aircraft at close quarters and take those very special close up photographs.

*Please note that there is a weight limit of 14 stone for this experience.
