Club prizes and winners – July to September 2018

All members of the RAF Memorial Flight Official Club are automatically entered into the Club’s monthly prize ballots and Club members have won some wonderful ballot prizes in the last three months. In addition, there were additional bonus prizes on offer in July and September. These were the Club prizes and winners for July to September 2018:

July ballot prize – A pen made from a Spitfire propeller

A Hordern-Richmond pen crafted from the wood of an original World War Two Spitfire propeller blade. From the Horden-Richmond ‘Aerodrome Range’, the pen embodies a piece of British aviation history and would usually cost £170.

Winner: Barry Springthorpe from Nottinghamshire.

August ballot prize – Two signed copies of RAF 100: The Official Story

RAF 100: The Official Story celebrates and commemorates the 100-year anniversary of the Royal Air Force. Officially endorsed by the RAF, and with unique access to their historic archives, the world-renowned broadcaster James Holland uses photographs and documents to tell the story of the Service’s people, the aircraft and the missions as never before. Two lucky winners won signed copies of the new book, which would usually cost £25.00 each.

Winners: Charles Newble from West Sussex and Allan Lee from Devon.

September ballot prize – A tour inside Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’

A guided tour inside Avro Lancaster NX611 ‘Just Jane’ at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre. The tour would usually cost £55.00 and also includes free admission to the museum (normally £7.50). The lucky winner gets a 30-minute guided tour inside the famous Lancaster and will be able sit in the different crew positions while a guide explains the aircraft’s history and its operational capabilities.

Bonus prizes

In addition to the fantastic ballot prizes for Club members, there were also additional bonus prizes on offer in July and September.

July bonus prize – An Airfix model kit of a ‘Dambuster’ Lancaster

A 1:72 scale Airfix model kit of an Avro Lancaster ‘Dambusters’ B.III (Special) with a wingspan of 432mm, which usually retails for £36.99. The primary paint scheme depicts Lancaster ED825/G ‘AJ-T’, the aircraft of Flight Lieutenant Joe McCarthy DFC and bomb aimer George ‘Johnny’ Johnson, which attacked the Sorpe Dam on the night of 16-17th May 1943.

September bonus prize – The Royal Air Force: The First One Hundred Years and Aerial Warfare: The Battle for the Skies 

Three lucky people won copies of both The Royal Air Force: The First One Hundred Years by John Buckley and Paul Beaver and Aerial Warfare: The Battle for the Skies by Frank Ledwidge.

Winners: Adrian Lyle, John Nobes and Anita Cross.
